To ALL the Leaders out there – leader of a ministry, a group, or a mentor to one other woman – God sees you as a leader!
We know that the burden of leadership is not to be taken lightly. But it is exciting and thrilling and scary and overwhelming all in the same breath sometimes!
It’s not about being g a boss, although sometimes you are.
It’s not about being noticed, although you will be.
It’s not about having influence, although you will.
It’s more than that – at least in God’s eyes.
Yet, these words or cautions were delivered to the leaders of the church – the disciples – by their friend and teacher, and leader…
But not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you, must be your servant. ~Matthew 20.26
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you should also wash one another’s feet. ~John 13.14
Paul wrote to the churches…
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit but in humility value others before yourselves not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others. ~Philippians 2.3-4
Humility. Humbling ourselves before others to the point of kneeling down and washing their feet. Wanting the best for them, serving their interests above our own. That’s a tall, tall order in a world that screams at all of us to be noticed, to be first, to be ‘a brand’ to be reckoned with!
I know what you’re thinking…Wow! No one told me when I started leading a small group – or ministry, or mentor – that I would have to do all that — be all that. I just thought it was cool that I got to lead the discussion, that my name was in the program.
Don’t fret. All leaders carry these initial badges of pride with them (some of us even polished them for awhile!). All leaders have been in that place where they wanted their interests served before the groups’. But all Leaders are human, and we tend toward the self more than we should, or are even willing to admit.
But Jesus was clear…not so with you…
But how do we do this well, God’s way?
